All dating relationships have their pluses and minuses. As with any relationship, a long-distance relationship has its own particular set of issues and rewards. Dating over a long distance is not for everybody mostly these relationships dry out before six months is up. However, some relationships do last and are able to succeed against all odds.

So who can succeed at a long distance dating relationship

When you think long distance relationships, internet relationships come to mind immediately. However, t here are other relationships that can be long distance, such as meeting someone through a friend who lives far away, or if your partner gets transferred to a different state or city, either temporarily or permanently. Perhaps your partner is studying abroad, or your husband is starting a job while you and the kids sell the house in another state.

Your significant other could be in the military and posted in another country. These relationships are long-distance, whether or not you’re dating. However, dating makes this already complex equation that much more complicated.

What are some minuses of long distance relationships

Long-distance relationships have their own set of pluses and minuses that are not related to regular dating difficulties that affect different people differently. Maybe you dont see these as minuses, and maybe some people wont be bothered at all. The following is a list of common issues that are found when in a long distance relationship.

You wont be able to see each other every day. Even though web cams make it possible for you to see your partner, its not the same as seeing your date in person.

It might not be possible to talk every day, especially if you are dating a person in the military.

Men and women process things differently that makes dating relationships hard. These issues escalate when you’re not able to see your partner and work through the problems. So your partner might end up thinking everything is OK with you when they’re not.

You’re in the dark when it comes to what your significant other is doing or who they’re spending time with. Trust is a factor that is hugely challenged in situations like this. Keep in mind that only with complete trust can you succeed in a long-distance relationship.

When you do get together again, the initial awkwardness will be weird. You’ll have to remember again what makes your partner happy.

What are some positives of long distance relationships

Granted that there are many minuses, but there are quite a few pluses. After all, no dating relationship will succeed if there are no rewards.

You aren’t tied to your partner all the time and therefore get to spend time with your other friends. This is a positive, as most people who are intensely dating dont see other people at all.

You tend to develop trust that goes beyond normal boundaries. Learning to trust is not easy and this adds character to you.

Your personal communication skills improve. Since you both need to share experiences, the only way is to talk, or type, or show via web cam. This will bring you closer and enhance mutual trust.

You will learn how to resolve problems. Its granted that you will have a few problems, but you’ll learn to work your way through them.

You’ll find yourself and be comfortable with who you are. In traditional dating, sometimes people end up emulating their date to such an extent that they tend to lose who they are. That problem wont occur in a long distance relationship.

When you’ve been apart for a long time, your eagerness to meet and bond physically again will make it feel like a fresh, new relationship each time.
